International Short Film Festival 2012
The International Short Film Festival of Cyprus, the official international short film competition of Cyprus, opens its doors at Rialto Theatre this October. This is the second consecutive year that the festival is upgraded to an international event, having already established itself through five successful bi-annual festivals exhibiting Cypriot films in competition. The Festival will take place from the 13th to the 20th October 2012 and it is co-organised by the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus and the Rialto Theatre. This year's festival is dedicated in memory of acclaimed Greek film director Theodoros Angelopoulos, who was violently killed in a road accident earlier this year.
The Festival celebrates the short film as a special genre of cinematic creation and expression, offering the audience a unique opportunity to enjoy some of the best local and international short film productions. Through an exciting parallel programme, events and workshops, the 2nd International Short Film Festival of Cyprus becomes a platform for inspiring short cinematic experiences and for creative dialogue with directors and film professionals from Cyprus and abroad. The parallel events and film screenings will be announced shortly.
The International Short Film Festival of Cyprus presents and awards the work of young talent as well as that of established filmmakers, showcasing fiction films, documentaries, experimental and animation films. 66 short films, that have already won awards and distinctions in important film festivals across the world, such as Cannes, Berlin, Rotterdam and Oberhausen, will participate in the international competition. 16 short films by Cypriot filmmakers will compete both in the national and international section to win awards worth more than 20,000 euros.
The selection of films and programming of screenings and parallel events, is undertaken by the artistic committee consisting of film directors Alexia Roider and Ioakim Mylonas.
