Iphigenia in Orem
Neil LaBute’s monologue “Iphigenia in Orem”, performed by Andreas Araouzos and directed by Andreas Christodoulides, is extending its international showcase since last year’s Damascus Festival and travels to Paris this year. The performance, co-produced by Alpha Square and Theatro Ena, will represent Cyprus in the second Theatre Platform for Mediterranean Countries in Paris, on 26th November.
The Cyprus audience gets another opportunity to see the show as three additional performances will be given in Nicosia. Audiences in Nicosia, Limassol, London and Damascus were left in an unnerving silence in all previous shows, caused by the dark and contemporary vision of casual atrocity. This is not about some classic Agamemnon story but, instead, a contemporary theatre piece from American playwright Neil LaBute’s collection of latterday plays «bash», where “normality flirts with brutality”.
The tragedy echo in the title comes to a sly contrast with the cold and simplistic everyday language in the writing. Inside a hotel room, a man confesses to a complete stranger a frightful experience that recently changed his life. But “Life goes on…”
The author has been acclaimed for his edgy and unsettling portrayal of human relationships. Boston Herald wrote: "LaBute explores the banality of evil ... for those who crave edgy, provocative theatre."
