Jazz & Dance meet Mozart
A thoroughly entertaining programme with works inspired by dance Aaron Copland, Dmitri Shostakovich, Darius Milhaud and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Conductor: Jens Georg Bachmann
Starting off with the boisterous Hoe Down from American composer Aaron Copland’s ballet Rodeo (1942), the CySO and maestro Bachmann proceed to jazz it up with excerpts from Shostakovich’s Suite for Variety Orchestra (post-1956) and then take the music through the roof in the company of an… ox through Milhaud’s Le Boeuf sur le toit, based on popular Brazilian tunes and premiered in Paris in 1920. We then come down to earth however with Mozart’s Haffner symphony, written in the summer of 1782, when the composer – already preoccupied with establishing his name in Vienna, finishing his Abduction from the Seraglio, mending relations with his fiancé Constanze and relocating to another residence – received a letter from his father asking him to write a symphony for the Salzburg burgmaster. Mozart of course obliged, sent it to his father in Salzburg, and even he himself was amazed when, a year later, he conducted it for the first time at the Burgtheater in Vienna.
