Karagiozis the Astronaut Flies to the Moon
Continuing the tradition of popular shadow play, launched by his grandfather, the famous Cypriot shadow puppeteer Christodoulos Pafios (1904–1987), Christodoulos Antoniou Pafios presents the play “Karagiozis the Astronaut Flies to the Moon”, inspired by Jules Verne’s humorous science fantasy novel “From the Earth to the Moon”.
The play, performed for the first time around 1930 by the prominent shadow puppeteer of Patra, Dinos Theodoropoulos, follows Verne’s example in combining fantasy and scientific fact to send a strong antiwar message that remains relevant even today.
The performance is complemented by an exhibition of posters and shadow play figures of 1950–1960, which presents the art of famous Greek shadow puppeteers such as Evgenios Spatharis, Vangos Korfiatis, Antonis Mollas, Yannis Dayakos, Thanasis Spyropoulos and others.
