Katerina Savvides - Familiar Emotions
50 plin 1 Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Katerina Savvides, opening on Friday first of June. The exhibition Familiar Emotions it will be open until June 30.
Katerina Savvides is a colourist and physical painter mainly working in oil and on a large scale. Her work has been described as authentic, raw, primitive, honest, and pure with energetic movement influenced by her dance background and musical family (especially jazz). Her use of vibrant colour is influenced by her eastern culture and extensive travel. “I am very much a process-based painter and my relationship with the canvas tends to be reactionary. I start off with an idea be it a colour or shape or something in nature and once I make the first mark or, the first few marks, the canvas seems to take over. IT tells me what to do. When I look at this in philosophical terms I come to an understanding of it being a process of eliminating the ego for that one instance in time. It’s not about what I think or what I feel. It’s about how open I am to allow a universal knowledge to pass through me. Where I am not the creator of the art but more a part of the creative process. I am just as important or unimportant as the brush, the canvas, the paint etc.”.
This body of work, ‘It’s Just About Painting’, explores the tightrope she constantly straddles between being in control and also allowing for things to happen outside of her control. An exploration into letting go of the ego of being in the moment, of trusting the now without any expectations of the future and with an internalisation of the past. “I seek to evoke familiar emotions in everyone realising that each one of us has come to the said emotion through different experiences. How we see the world is extremely subjective but it is also my belief that we are not that different.”
