Käthe Kollwitz presents a brief history of modern art

Cyprus : Käthe Kollwitz presents a brief history of modern art

History. Deriving from the Greek language, the word denotes research, information, narration; past events relevant to humanity. I am Käthe Kollwitz and I have come to America. In search of something. How it is to live. Being alive.

THE PRODUCTION
On 10 November, Fotagogos Group stages its first theatrical production with Elena Penga’s Käthe Kollwitz presents a brief history of modern art. The show, a stage reading, is directed by Andri H. Constantinou with set design by visual artist Panagiotis Michael. Lenia Sorokou plays Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945), German sculptor and printmaker whose life and work have been marked by the two World Wars. This is the first presentation of Greek playwright Elena Penga’s work in Cyprus.

THE PLAY
Penga does not set out to write a dramatic monologue but a work of fiction: though dead for half a century, Kollwitz appears at a gallery in Soho, New York, to deliver a lecture on modern art. The invitation comes from the original idea of a gallery owner. The heroine puts to use this opportunity to return to the world of the living, but in doing so she does not limit herself to the role assigned to her through the play’s title: she actually declares she has come to America seeking “how it is to live”.
