Laura Nicolaou - Favole
isnotgallery presents Laura Nicolaou's first solo exhibition entitled Favole, on Friday 27 May, at 8pm.
Opening regards by Mrs Photini Papadopoulou.
In Maria’s Eustathiou curatorial note the following is mentioned among other:
"A fable can hide within it a secret wish, an untold fear, or a historical narration. This kind of feeling is reflected in the art of Laura Nicolaou. Featuring art works that evoke feelings of optimism, or even restlessness to the viewer, the artist makes her debut in the art scene.
The female figure dominates her paintings expressed on the canvass with basic and essential materials such as charcoal combined with ink, soft color pastels and spray paint.
These two sections – from one side works that are based on old vintage photographs that borrow elements from the art nouveau era and on the other side the so called by the artist “modern nymphs” that are expressed in a more modern and personal to the artist way seem to come in a continuous dialogue.
The figures that are taken from old photographs, charged with the history of the era in which the original image belongs to, tell stories quite different from those told by the "modern nymphs”. These last ones are combined with dark elements to compose surreal images, from which countless details pop out, like hidden secondary images and other narrations with which the viewer is startled.
The compositions forming the series “favole” are characterized by a light and playful feeling with grace and intimacy, elements that refer to the rococo style. From another perspective, the decorative nuance that is so evident in the artist’s works, suggest characteristics of the art nouveau. What links the artist’s works together is references from the Gothic style. Combinations of different styles give Laura’s artistic work a freshness and a diversity" .
