Αφουγκράσου / Listen
Exhibition by Katerina Xenofontos.
Artist’s note:
Αφουγκράσου/Listen looks in detail at the rise of artefacts from tradition in contemporary practice since over the last few years the troubled relationship between Craft and Fine Art has brought many discussions in arts about the crossing of boundaries between the two disciplines.
The work brings together moments from traditional crocheting in the island of Cyprus and contemporary practices following at the same time thoughts which include history, the intangible culture, identity and new identity.
The installation uses the idea of a fine crocheting as a non fixed framework for investigating the increasing interest on artefacts in contemporary practices, to tie together untold stories on crocheting said from mother to daughter to granddaughter and many other information collected at a research on motifs in crochet design.
Through craft and crocheting the question addressed by the work is extend beyond the role of artefacts and critically reflects on issues which look towards the direction and the concept of place, in terms of identification.
Finally this is an interactive installation,
take a step forward and rest on the pillow…
Close your eyes and let yourself
listen the voice of tradition…
