Maria Farantouri - Alkinoos Ioannides

Cyprus : Maria Farantouri - Alkinoos Ioannides

100 years since the birth of a leading poet and lyricist Nikos Gatsos, who inspired some of the most important composers – Manos Hadjidakis, Mikis Theodorakis, Stavros Xarchakos and many others of the younger generation who followed their lead – to create songs which decisively influenced the development of the artistic, postwar Greek music. Works of poetry, written for life’s struggles and expectations, for beauty and for love, that have for decades a permanent role in our heart. An anthology of these songs will be presented by Maria Farantouri (who started her unique career with the “Blood Moon”, lyrics by Gatsos and music by Theodorakis), and Alkinoos Ioannides, not only as a singer but as a composer at the same time, presents new songs he composed on Nikos Gatsos lyrics.

The concert is a “greeting to the teacher and a small gift in return to the feelings he has offer us through his lyrics” as the great singer Maria Farantouri mentions. We will listen to Gatsos’s masterpieces of great Song Cycles of Manos Hadjidakis, Mikis Theodorakis, Stavros Xarchakos, Dimos Moutsis, Christodoulos Chalaris and Alkinoos Ioannides. Among the lyrics, which were mostly written on the melodies, have been included and those rise through works of the international drama acts (such as “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams and “Blood Wedding” by Federico Garcia Lorca) and even works from international films (“America-America” by Elia Kazan or “Rebetiko” by Costas Ferris).

In this tribute to Nikos Gatsos, also participates “the last singer of Manos Hadjidakis”, Vasilis Gisdakis, as well a musical ensemble of distinguished soloists under the direction of Miltos Logiadis.
