Maria Polycarpou - Cyprus: Continuous Pursuit
The new year begins at Gloria Gallery with the opening of an exhibition by Maria Polycarpou entitled “Cyprus: Continuous Pursuit”.
The exhibition will be opened by Dr. Fofi Constantinidou, Associate Professor and Chair of the Psychology Department at the University of Cyprus on Wednesday the 4th of January at 19.30.
Maria Polycarpou studied Painting at the School of Fine Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria, earning a Masters of Fine Arts degree. Subsequently she studied Art Education at the University of Cincinnati, USA, where she obtained a Masters in Art Education. She has exhibited her work in Cyprus and in the USA, where she lived with her family. Her works are in many private art collections.
Maria has worked as a teacher at several high schools in Cyprus and the USA. She is currently an Art teacher at the Grammar School, where her students have won several art competitions.
Her recent work depicts images from Cyprus which are characterized by impressionistic tendencies. For Maria artistic instinct is particularly important with special emphasis on the clarity of color. In her paintings, we see small, impersonal instances attain personality, as they are portrayed with a certain calmness and harmony but at the same time with liveliness and dynamism, with the brushstroke determining their sensory perception.
