Martha Mavroidi w/ Ventouris & Papadopoulos (GR), Larva (CY), Philippou/Koutis (CY)
Martha Mavroidi is a singer, lutist, lafta player and composer from Greece and has participated in various world and contemporary music projects in Europe and the United States. She also conducts the Greek Folk Choir of the National Conservatory of Holargos and is the artistic director of the Tinos World Music Festival. With Giorgos Ventouris & Ioannis Papadopoulos they will perform original compositions combining elements of Balkan music traditions with contemporary harmony and improvisation. Their musical ideas derive from the melodic and rhythmic richness of Balkan and Eastern Mediterranean music, transformed into a modern musical idiom.
Larva (Vassilis Philippou and Alexis Kasinos) draws inspiration from Cypriot folk melodies and rhythms merged with western music elements. They create a new approach on revisiting tradition and writing original songs and rearranging traditional songs, using influences from world and jazz music. It transforms ideas that emanate from the past into contemporary sounds, in a completely new format; like the metamorphosis of larva in nature.
Vassilis Philippou and Giannis Koutis will present selected compositions from Philippou’s solo debut album ‘O Ilios Tis Afkis - Sol Aurorae’. Their set will include pieces influenced by musical traditions of the eastern Mediterranean, where the Cypriot dialect holds an important place as it gives meaning to the music’s sound and directly influences its expression. ‘O Ilios Tis Afkis’ is a constant reminder of life and searching, the union and communication of the archetypal senses of humankind.
