Matchbox: War within four walls

ETHAL presents the play "Matchbox: War within four walls" by the Cypriot director, script writer and actor Yannis Economides.

The play is a family drama tinged with dark humour and strident social criticism.

Dimitris, a grumpy middle-aged man, is having a hard time with his business partner on a particular decision as to opening a new business; and he's also having a hell of a time with his family members. He has a really short temper, and the unpleasant behaviour of his nasty wife and his disrespectful children don't contribute much to his deteriorating health.

“I have always been preoccupied with the issue of apathy and the worn-out patience of the Greeks. For me this has a fundamental significance and I try to bring it forward in my films. It concerns people who belong to the middle class or are well beneath the middle class, who are driven to the most basic form of violence as a result of social injustice, unemployment, exclusion, poverty, alienation and brutality. Phenomena we observed are now at our door-step.” (Yannis Economides)
