Local group Μonsieur Doumani, by now known for their innovative and distinctive approach towards Cypriot traditional music will be performing live their much discussed, newly released debut album «Grippy Grappa”. The concert is organised within the framework of the 16th Cultural Festival of the University of Cyprus at the Axiothea mansion in Nicosia. Apart from the pieces from the album, the band will also perform new unreleased material. Mrs Maroulla Constantinou will be the special guest of the night.
The album «Grippy Grappa”, which is mainly comprised of reworkings of traditional Cypriot pieces, has received excellent reviews from international media such as the British newspaper «The Guardian», the French magazine «Les InRocks» and the music magazine «fRoots». Their album was also amongst the «Top of the World» albums in the 88th issue of «Songlines» one of the most important ethnic music magazines. The album was also presented by radio stations world wide such as BBC Radio3, RootsWorld Radio, PBS FM Melbourne, KDVS FM California etc.
Monsieur Dοumani was formed in 2011 in Nicosia by Antonis Antoniou (tzouras), Angelos Ionas (guitar) and Demetris Yiasemidis (wind instruments). The members of Monsieur Doumani all come from different musical backgrounds but are linked by Cypriot folk music. They focus on rearranging Cypriot traditional music adding a modern twist to the sound and the mood of the pieces. They also compose their own Cypriot pieces inspired by modern Cypriot society. The group has already participated in a number of music festivals both in Cyprus and abroad. It is worth noting that in August 2012 Monsieur Doumani represented Cyprus at the international ‘Ferrara Buskers Festival’ in Italy where they were voted third most favorite band of the festival.
