Music of the Enlightenment
The Cosi fan tutte overture is one of the funniest things Mozart ever wrote, with its themes portraying cheating individuals who, at the same time however, are far too harmless to deserve our condemnation. In his notes on the Piano concerto no. 17, Mozart’s publisher praises the elegance of the second movement and the "exceptionally beautiful modulations" and difficulties of the third, while for the first he notes that this is no less difficult! Haydn’s Symphony no. 99 is the seventh of the twelve “London” Symphonies and was written in 1793 in anticipation of the composer’s second trip to London. Apparent in this symphony is the likely influence on the then 61-year-old composer of the younger Mozart (whose fondness for the clarinet can be seen in many of his works), with Haydn making his first-ever use of clarinets in a symphony.
