Musical Clock of Yesterday and Today
It is always especially enlightening to juxtapose the classical style with 20th century styles in a programme. Our musical clock first stops at the Serenade for strings by contemporary Cypriot composer Nicos Troullos. It then ticks back in the 1950s with Martinů’s viola concerto loved for its moving lyrical passages and intense climaxes. Finally, we travel more than two centuries back with Haydn’s popular “Clock” Symphony, pervaded by heartfelt joy and a characteristic "ticking" rhythm throughout its 2nd movement.
N. TROULLOS: Serenade for strings
B. MARTINŮ: Rhapsody concerto for viola and orchestra
J. HAYDN: Symphony no. 101 (“The Clock”)
Soloist: Yuri Zhislin (viola)
