Musical Titans
In the Nicosia concert, the CySO will perform Syrian composer Kareem Roustom’s work «Dabke» (stamping of the feet), a folk-dance native to the Levant and widely performed at weddings and other joyous occasions.
Mozart’s Symphony no. 39 may well be the least popular of the composer’s three last symphonies, but it’s no less a masterwork than the other two. Granted, it doesn’t have the tragic romanticism of the 40th or the magnificent heroics of the 41st (the Jupiter), with its hallmarks however no less musical but simply more difficult to pinpoint; a work unjustifiably underrated…
As for Beethoven’s 5th, it’s probably the most well-known piece of western music in the world. The famous four opening notes are so ingrained in people’s minds that they’ve become an icon of classical music! And no wonder – its catchy rhythm is used as the basis for the entire symphony which, by the way, only gets better and better from the start!
