My name is Rachel Corrie
The well-known actress Mania Papadimitriou takes up the role of the director to bring to stage the stunning play by Alan Rickman and Katharine Viner “My name is Rachel Corrie”. The plays recounts a true story, which took place just a few years ago, in 2003 – the story of the young American activist of Jewish descent, Rachel Corrie, who was killed by an Israeli bulldozer on the Gaza Strip, trying to save a Palestinian home from demolition.
Based on Rachel’s diaries and e-mails which she often sent to her relatives and friends, the play was staged for the first time at the Royal Court Theatre in London, in 2005, and has since been performed with great success in many countries around the world. It received numerous prizes and awards, while controversy still surrounds the cancellation of scheduled performances in New York, Miami and Toronto for fear of political retaliation.
Recognising in Rachel Corrie a contemporary Anna Frank, Mania Papadimitriou approached the play as a political act, as an act of activism of sorts that seeks to and sometimes succeeds in reminding us what should not be forgotten and in preventing us from getting too comfortable with any system just because it does not reject us.
