Naked - Ceramics Exhibition by Celia Potoudis Macpherson
Opus 39 Gallery proudly presents “Naked”, a series of new work by Celia Potoudis Macpherson.
['Naked' is a curious name for an exhibition. The essence of Celia Potoudis Macpherson's work is the clay which she usually leaves exposed and vulnerable to the vagaries of fire...]
The exhibition will be opened by Anna Marangou, Archaeologist & Art Historian, Tuesday, 20 February 2018 at 7.30p.m.
Celia Potoudis Macpherson was born in Nicosia. She studied International Relations and Middle East Studies at university and worked as a journalist in London. Ceramics began as a hobby interest, but after moving to live in Kenya she studied with local potters. Later on she lived in Dubai where she taught ceramics and exhibited regularly.
Her work draws on Ancient Greek pottery and African traditions, reflecting the way that clay is both timeless and universal, connecting us to other cultures and epochs.
The final firing process, smoke or naked raku, has a will of its own with unpredictable results. By allowing fire to have the final word, raku embodies the philosophy of wabi sabi, which celebrates the whims of nature, encourages us to accept the imperfections and irregularities that arise out of the making process and that give meaning and life to an object, making it unrepeatable and unique.
