The next Wednesday Lecture will be given by Dr Christodoulos Hadjichristodoulou, Byzantinist and Head of the Bank of Cyprus Historical Archive on January 14th 2015 at 19:40.
Entitled ‘The Nativity Stories in Cypriot Byzantine and Post Byzantine Art’, the lecture will explore both the continuities and deviations in the depiction of the Birth of Christ and the various events that followed, looking at prominent and unknown artists from the mid-Byzantine period to the end of the 19th century. Dr Hadjichristodoulou will also discuss the portrayal of the Nativity in UNESCO World Heritage monuments of the island and on wall paintings and portable icons of other churches and look at examples of the scene painted on precious, semi-precious and everyday materials.
He will round off with examples of 20th century Nativity scenes, some of which can be found in the A. G. Leventis Gallery’s first international temporary exhibition ‘The Nativity Stories’.
Seating is limited, to reserve a place telephone 22668838 or email [email protected] by January 12.
