Nicosia: the Last Divided Capital in Europe
The Cyprus Centre of the London Metropolitan University would like to announce a set of events, with the theme based on the City of Nicosia, to take place at the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia. The main focus of the events will be a major conference, entitled “Nicosia: the Last Divided Capital in Europe”. This will take place on the 5th November between 8.45 - 17.00 and will target an audience drawn from non-native residents such as those in diplomatic circles, journalists and academics. The Mayor of Nicosia, Ms Eleni Mavrou, will open the conference.
The themes we would like to cover include:
• Ancient to modern history of Nicosia
• Development of areas of Nicosia, including the history and development of the airport
• Architecture and town planning
• The political implications of division
• Art, books and poetry of the City
• Non-Cypriot and repatriated Cypriot recollections of the City and life therein
In addition to the Conference we aim to present the city through Video and Virtual Presentations and Exhibitions looking at themes such as: the Nicosia City Walls, Nicosia International Airport, Book Exhibition and Old Nicosia. Prominent speakers are drawn from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines and include those listed, also attached.
We do hope you will be able to attend to what promises to be an interesting and informative event. Please note that Attendance is Complimentary, refreshments & lunch will be provided, but we would appreciate being informed of your intended attendance. Late requests for attendance can be considered up to the 4th November by phoning 99 180776.
