Nicosia: The Story of a shared and contested city
Did you know that the people of Nicosia called Ledra Street 'Makrydromos' for decades, or that Eleftheria Square was called Metaxas Square until the mid-1970s? Did you know that until the early twentieth century one side of Hermes (Ermou) Street, one of the main commercial roads of the city, was a dry riverbed full of garbage and mosquitos? Or that even after the first division of the city in the late 1950s people in Hermes Street still traded over the barbed wire as they had done for decades before?
If not, then don't worry; until recently neither did we. You can learn all about that and much more through ‘Nicosia: The story of a shared and contested city’ project that will be launched in early 2016.
Join us for the public launch of the project:
Friday, 15 January 2015 at the Home for Cooperation (UN Buffer Zone, across Ledra Palace Hotel)
This initiative is being undertaken as part of the 'Home for Cooperation' Project, funded by EEA and Norway Grants (2009-2014) and in partnership with the Council of Europe and is an activity of the 'Home for Cooperation' project. The 'Home for Cooperation' benefits from a 624,725 EUR grant from Norway Grants. The aim of the project is to support the operation and sustainability of the 'Home for Cooperation', which shall contribute to the bridge-building between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities in Cyprus. www.norwaygrants.org
