Nicosia Street Parade

On the 24th of December, Street Parade turns 6 years old and is celebrating, starting from the school of Faneromeni and from there on skedaddles in search of its own utopias. Our well-known musical vehicle and the underground cultures venture once again on their journey through the streets and the worlds, the squares and every type of corner in Nicosia, creating spaces and time which are open, public and free. Against consumerism and gentrification and their continuous alienating effects on our cities and our lives, we parade and dance and sing for our right to the city and the commons, without any kind of sponsors or logos. For a multicultural and cosmopolitan city, where solidarity and hospitality arrange parties here and there, where diversity meets self-organization and participation.

We erect benches, lie under the trees and sit on the steps, we dress up, put up a circus, cook and share soup, lose ourselves in the rhythms of the African drums, in the sets and interventions of street theater. We question divisions and discrimination, we walk and dance together, between the barrels and the barb-wire, defying the blinding lights of the advertising boards and the multistory malls, we hug and kiss, without taboo and fear, we live our lives with imagination and love, without any coupons or discounts.
