Nina Iacovou - Clay. Modern aspects of tradition
Gloria Gallery presents a sculpture exhibition by Nina Iacovou entitled "Clay. Modern aspects of tradition".
Nina Iacovou was born in Famagusta in 1933. In 1953 she studies sculpture In Athens for a year at the School of Fine Art. In 1967, urged by A. Diamantis, she obtains a scholarship by the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education, returns to Athens and continues her studies. She was taught by the great Greek sculptor and teacher of ceramics Yioryi Georgiou. She learns the technique of ancient Cyprus terracotta in the Famagusta Museum and “koukoumares” the unique human shape vessels in the traditional pottery shops of the town. Nina Iacovou is one of the first two sculptresses of Cyprus. Before the invasion of 1974 her work is found in different hotels in Famagusta or in private collections.Since 1974 she lives and works in Larnaca. First she continues her work with “koukoumares” preserving the tradition and later on the impact, the torture and experience from the invasion as a refugee affect her work leading her to different subjects and expression. She firstly creates “Shout” and later on “ the protests” and “the series of war”. She advances to simplicity and expressionism. Although she has been creating sculpture for 60 years, she has only 3 solo exhibitions in 2002 in Gloria Gallery, in 2005 a retrospective exhibition by the Cultural Services of Larnaca Municipality and in 2013 in E.KA.TE (Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts) as an honorary dedication to the first members, founders of E.KA.TE. She also participated in numerous group exhibitions in Cyprus and Greece. Her work has been presented by RIK (the state television channel) before and after 1974. She has been giving lectures on ceramics in the Larnaca Municipality Gallery and in the Women’s Greek Lyceum.
