Nina Sumarac - Uninterrupted Stare
Portrait exhibition of drawings in charcoal and pastel by Nina Sumarac at the gallery Rouan in Limassol.
"I deliberately cut photographs of seated figures, from above the knee to below eyes, leaving the subject without "a mirrors of the soul".
So what remains? Does the central part of the body hide a treasure or is it just a degraded creation of God?
Or is there perfection in every part that can tell a story ?
I stare at the skin, the pose of whole body, the cloths; the shoulders, lips and hands, they are moving; the environment in which model sits , how comfortable they are; what their soul radiates ... It's alive!
My vision awakened and I am seeing for the first time a person I know, I understand better and love more. They are real in their existence. Substantial to me.
I became aware of an intimacy between us. Devoid of talking and eye contact I find this acceptance frees me from perfection whilst stimulating my imaginations.
I can just play with design and drop myself in to a big puzzle of contour lines and textures.
Or, because the model is severed of identity (the eyes ), it becomes easier in every portrait to express myself;
And I can have fun by making them characters of my imaginary world!
Each person is a mirror with my own reflection.
Yet , everyone I see as a transforming energy that develops, varies and modifies without limitation of character.
My drawing is no longer a portrait of my friend. This is a landscape of me drenched in my friend (washed together)." - Nina Jablonsky Sumarac.
The exhibition opens on the 28th of March at 20:00.
