OLKAS II
SAILING FROM AND TO BYZANTIUM. MEDIEVAL PORTS FROM EUXEINOS PONTOS TO EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN

The current exhibition is a visual journey to the enthralling world of the East. Through maps, portolans, engravings, miniatures of manuscripts, postcards and photos from the 11th c. up today, various aspects of 60 ports of Euxeinos Pontos, Aegean and Cyprus are presented highlighting the rich medieval past of the respective countries. The exhibition is entitled: “OLKAS II”, inspired by the commercial ship of the Byzantines which for centuries carried to the seas of the East men and products, and through them, artistic values and cultural products, which influenced the character of the medieval civilization both within and outside the byzantine empire.

“OLKAS II” consists the extension of the project “OLKAS” implemented by the European Centre for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments in collaboration with seven institutions from Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine and Georgia in the frame of the project: “OLKAS. From Aegean to the Black Sea. Medieval city-ports in the maritime routes of the East” funded by the EU “Joint Operational Program “Black Sea 2007-2013”. With the collaboration of the Society of Cypriot Studies OLKAS II is extended to the Aegean and to the Eastern Mediterranean, including more 21 ports in Aegean and six of Cyprus. A bilingual Catalogue (Greek-English) accompanies the exhibition. The fascinating trip to Mediterranean waters just begun….
