21 June 2013: ‘Shadows and Faces’, by Cypriot director Dervis Zaim
Synopsis: The film is set against the background of the beginning of the conflict between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots in 1963. A teenage girl is separated from her father, a shadow play master, when the two are forced to flee from their village by escalating violence. Her attempts to find her father are intertwined with the consequences of an ever increasingly oppressive Greek regime. More than mere shadows and faces, characters and situations are presented in their complex depth to create a human drama that is both contemporary relevant and remarkable achievement.
