(OUT)Doors
(OUT)Doors is an art exhibition presenting the work of students and faculty of the Department of Arts of the European University of Cyprus. The exhibition will take place at ARTos Foundation, providing the opportunity for a new collaboration between the two cultural institutions. The opening of the exhibition will be on Thursday, May 27, 2010, at 8:30 pm and the works will be on display for two days only.
(OUT)Doors is inspired by the creative potential that doors withhold as actual passages from and to another, often unknown, space or plane. Other times doors are points of return to places revisited once before, and thus openings to the reenactment of memories, experiences and sensations. Mario Gandelsonas in his House X (1982) suggests that a ‘door is a particular formal solution to opening a vertical plane between two spaces, permitting both their separation and their connection ... Doors then acquire their meaning of actual passage within a context of a code of openings’. Whilst actual passages doors are also signs connoting the symbolic act of passing through; the latter a metaphorical journey to knowledge, to better understanding of the self, and/or to new adventures. One never knows what lays behind a closed door. So, despite the excitement and stimulation of a closed door’s mysteries, passing through this door is an act of risk taking for never finding what one expected or for loosing the certainty with which one initially entered a new or revisited ‘place’.
Inspired by these ideas, (OUT)Doors aims to similarly remove the work from the known environment of the university and present it in ARTos as the new ‘location’; a space whose doors open for the first time for this type of collaboration. Taking the risk for such an event is based on the conviction that it is only through experimentation that one shifts from a comfort zone to one filled with creative potential. Through three-dimensional structures, video projections and animation, photographs, prints and paintings, the participants in this art exhibition engage in a dialogic exchange with a new place, a new environment and with a new audience, inviting the visitors to contribute to the success of this creative process of risk taking “outdoors”.
