Philippos Yiapanis - Sculptures in bronze and marble
Silks Gallery is honored to present the magnificent sculptures in bronze and marble by the Cypriot sculptor, Philippos Yiapanis. The first impression one gets from viewing Philippos Yiapanis's sculptures is one of a beautiful balance between serenity and harmony. His minimalistic style has shaken off all the useless elements of naturalism simply leaving the necessary key formulas behind. The end result is restituted by the simplicity and purity of shape and symbolism.
One of the main themes which the artist incorporates into his sculptures is the symbol of the woman in her various aspects: as the life bearer, the mother, the one that nurtures and protects, whilst able to do harm to any lover who maltreats her. These aspects are mirrored by the required subsidiary elements taken from nature such as the bird, the fish, the snail or the pomegranate, elements which have been used for their strong symbolism throughout the history of art.
Philippos Yiapanis was born in Famagusta in 1957 and studied shipbuilding in Greece. When he returned to Cyprus, he did not take up the profession, but instead went on to work in his family's business. He is a self taught sculptor and up to this day is driven by his love of sculpture making. He started experimenting with clay at the age of 35 and his immense love for this form of art grew more and more. He built his studio in the village of Fasoula which also includes an outdoor gallery and a small amphitheatre to host various events. His art is appreciated not only in Cyprus but also worldwide.
In Cyprus many of his creations are currently showcased in various public spaces such as in Ayia Napa, in Kouklia, Kean Factory and many more. His sculptures are also internationally renowned and can be found publically displayed in European countries such as in Denmark or Switzerland.
In December 2007 he took part in the Florence Biennale, after being invited by the Organizing Committee of the event. His most recent international acknowledgment came in 2008 where his sculpture Olympic Spirit was distinguished in an international art competition dedicated to the Olympic Games of Beijing 2008 and was exhibited there. The Chinese Posts and Philatelic Company of China chose his artwork to be published in the Beijing 2008 Olympics Album.
This award winning sculpture will be up for sale at Silks Gallery and those interested will also have the opportunity to view the Chinese Olympics Album where the work is published, which will be on display during the entire exhibition.
The sculptures that Silks gallery will be presenting are limited - some of which are entirely unique and have no other alike. The exhibit will have a lot to give to real art connoisseurs and those who appreciate elegant shape and form in all its colossal beauty. The opening of the exhibition by Philippos Yiapanis will take place on the 6th March 2009 and will stay on until the 31st March 2009.
