Phoenix
Phoenix (Φοῖνιξ)
Ode to Life
A newly-formed group of artists is proposing a celebration of the International Day of Dance with PHOENIX, to be performed at Casteliotissa Hall in Nicosia on 28 April 2011 at 8:00 p.m. The performance, as an ode to Life, by the use of powerful symbolism, aims to convey the message that:
“Out of every destruction arises an opportunity for rebirth.”
When the Phoenix reaches the end of its life cycle, it builds itself a nest of frankincense, cinnamon and myrrh, which it sets on fire. As both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, the phoenix leaves its last breath in a mystical trance, incurred by the burning incenses. From the ashes a new, young phoenix is reborn, ready to live a new life. When this has grown up and gained sufficient strength, it lifts its nest from the tree (its own cradle and its parent's sepulchre), and carries it to finally deposit it in the temple of the Sun.
Life triumphs over death because such is the power of the soul. It is immortal. It is said that the fairwell cry of the Phoenix is a beautiful song – for the process of rebirth is itself a beautiful process: it brings the gift of New Life. Being alive is in itself an opportunity, a window of abundant possibilities for each one of us to create the life s/he wants to live and be happy.
