Design in Action: Politics, Resistance and Social Change
Considering various social issues and current theoretical debates relating to political rationality, five artists, academics, and theoreticians from different disciplines will gather for a roundtable discussion on how art and different forms of design could potentially act as agents of social and political change. The participants will present a variety of works of art and/or design that directly challenge and re-invent conventional readings of identity, the social condition, gender and gendered ‘objects’, cultural heritage, the urban landscape and the built environment, and material culture. The discussion also aims at opening the platform for the local community to engage with debate and dialogue concerning the reassessment of orthodox historiography of design and draw connections between the local design production with international trends.
Participants:
Tasos Anastasiades, European University Cyprus
Stavros Karayiannis, European University Cyprus
Nicolas Lambouris, Frederick University
Omiros Panayides, Cyprus University of Technology
Nicos Philippou, University of Nicosia
Chairs: Dr Elena Stylianou and Dr Sophia Hadjipapa, European University Cyprus
** The presentations and discussion will be in Greek
The roundtable discussion is organised by the Department of Arts, European University Cyprus in the context of the Cultural Month and the concurring exhibition 'Design in Action'.
