Pop-up Festival 2014
For a second consecutive year, the Nicosia Municipality organises the Pop-up Festival 2014 in Makarios Avenue. For two months (15 November 2014 –15 January 2015) in the main shopping road artery of the capital, young entrepreneurs, creators, artists, craftsmen and other professionals, as well as start ups will present their innovative ideas, show their creative work and come into contact with the public of Nicosia.
The main objective of this year’s festival is to both stimulate and revive Makarios Avenue by boosting entrepreneurship, either through commercial activity or through innovative services, and capturing the energies of new talents. The festival will be accompanied by a range of related activities –educational, cultural, recreational– focusing on the active participation of the public.
As its name suggests, the Pop-up Festival 2014 is inspired by pop-up shops, shops that “pop up” temporarily along commercial streets, displaying products for sale, while playing host to cultural events, attracting the attention of consumers. After the great success of last year’s festival, the Nicosia Municipality has managed this year to find many more vacant shops, which were kindly lent free of charge by their owners to participating interested parties. More specifically, while in 2013 there were 10 shops, this year there will be 27.
This year’s organisation was commissioned to the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre, Associated with the Pierides Foundation [NiMAC], which extended an open call for proposals, through which the participants were selected. It should be noted that originally more than 70 proposals were submitted; 39 were eventually selected.
