Rabbits running for reunification

Cyprus : Rabbits running for reunification

In the year 1989, the Wind of Change, as the German band THE SCORPIONS sang, blew down stone walls and iron curtains, transforming the world. A year later, on 9 November, the two Germanies were reunified.

From 08. – 19. October 2010, the Goethe-Zentrum Nicosia, in cooperation with the Embassy of Poland and the Embassy of Germany, will screen a series of award winning short films at its premises, 21, Markou Drakou, next to the old Ledra Palace, reminding of those decisive events twenty years ago.

On Friday, 08 October 20.00 hrs, the screening will start with the Polish-German co-production “Rabbit a la Berlin”, which was awarded numerous international prizes and nominated for Oscar 2010 in the category documentary short. Two young Polish film makers, Bartek Konopka and Piotr Rosolowski, chose an unexpected and unusual perspective to show the story of the Wall and the reunification of Germany, depicting it from the rabbits’ point of view: Thousands of wild rabbits colonized the 150 km strip between Berlin’s two walls and lived there in peace and security for 28 years when suddenly they had to try to survive in a free world. “Just as the rabbits were expelled from their makeshift Eden when the Berlin wall came down, many in the Soviet bloc had to adjust to the strange post-communist world”, Geoffrey McNab from the Guardian comments. The film represents a witty, humorous history lesson with many allegorical pictures of the Wall not published so far.

The screening will be preceded by a welcome address of H.E., Mr. Pawel Dobrowolski, Ambassador of Poland, and H.E., Mr. Gottfried Zeitz, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany. A discussion and cocktail will follow the screening.

The second part of the film series consists of two evenings with a selection of short films, all winners of the 3rd International short film competition in 2008, jointly organized by the Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility, and Future” and the Goethe-Institut on the subject of “Crossing the Boundaries”. Young film makers were asked to submit their visions of the geographic and socio-cultural legacies of the events of 1939 and the social consequences of 1989. The competition was open for film school students from Belarus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Israel, Latvia, Poland, Russia, Ukraine and the USA.

Out of 335 submitted projects treating the subject with fiction films, documentaries, animations or using the topic as a metaphor looking at the limits of human communication, 19 films were awarded prizes. The Goethe-Zentrum will screen ten among them.

On Friday, 15 October, 20.00 hrs, the following films will be shown:
