Red
As part of its one-year anniversary celebration, the A. G. Leventis Gallery will host the Tony award-winning drama RED on its premesis, for eight performances only.
This theatre offering will be the Cyprus premiere of John Logan’s 2010 play, and is presented in collaboration with Alpha Productions.
RED’s subject is the
artist Mark Rothko, and it focuses on the period 1958-1959 when Rothko was preparing a series of murals for the Four Seasons Hotel in New York. The drama raises important issues through conversations between Rothko and his young assistant, Ken, on the role of art, how commercialism can affect art, the artist and his relationship with the viewer.
RED was first presented in London, with Alfred Molina and Eddie Redmayne in the leads; in Athens Stamatis Fasoulis and Odysseas Papaspiliopoulos reprised the roles. Anthi Zachariades has translated the play for the Cyprus production, with Andreas Araouzos directing and Varnavas Kiriazis and Andreas Koutsoumbas performing. Giorgos Giannou is in charge of costumes and set design.
