Remembering History - a Case Study from Germany
Very few societies have the good fortune to boast a truly unproblematic, non-violent past. Dark corners are often found even in exemplary democracies that have not fought wars.
For most countries, the process of coming to terms with the past after a despotic regime collapsed, a civil war came to an end or a revolution took place is a difficult one.
As they believe that it is essential that every modern society should be able to come to terms with the past, - by which, of course, is meant a critical re-evaluation that does not shy away from addressing difficult issues and taboos -, the Goethe-Institut Cyprus together with the Association for Historical Research and Dialogue, the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation Cyprus and “Together we can” – The Bicommunal Initiative of Relatives of Missing Persons and Victims of Massacres and War, invite to a seminar (in English) about:
“Remembering History – a Case Study from Germany”
on Saturday, 16th March 2013 from 10am -1.30 pm at the Home for Cooperation (Nicosia buffer zone opposite Ledra Palace hotel)
Participants from Germany will be Ms. Magdalena Scharf from “Action Reconciliation / Services for Peace” and Mr. Uwe Bader, director of the ex-concentration camp Osthofen memorial and information centre.
Moderation will be done by the Cypriot investigative journalist Ms. Sevgül Uludag.
All interested in discussing the matter and trying to relate the topic to the situation in Cyprus are cordially invited to attend.
Accompanying this seminar will be an art exhibition by Cypriot artists called “The Color of Truth” from both communities about the “Missing Persons”-issue at the Goethe-Institut’s gallery in the buffer zone, which will be opened on Friday, 15th March 2013 at 6.30 pm in the presence of the artists and which is organized in cooperation with the bi-communal NGO “Together we can” – The Bicommunal Initiative of Relatives of Missing Persons and Victims of Massacres and War . This exhibition will be open until 22nd March 2013 mondays to fridays from 11am till 7 pm.
