Remix of Charm and Politics
Artist Panikos Tembriotis presents the exhibition titled “Remix of Charm and Politics…” at the Municipal Market of Nicosia, also known as the market of the old town hall, from the 17th to the 28th of May 2016.
Panicos Tembriotis’ current work (installation) predominates a series of anthropomorphic sculptures - constructions.
The figures in his work are lined up on metal bases reminiscent of monumental statues of heroes or a composition of a bizarre parade floats. Looking at the figures in more detail we discover that it is a series of hybrid beings which consist of the union of naked figure with objects or animals. If we see these figures as units, they may frighten, but as a whole their harmonious composition and fluidity in the movement, gives a peaceful harmony.
In this group of work, the artist chooses to keep the element of the composition as raw material form, often playing and bringing out the rough surfaces of the material. Therefore, the building blocks of composition emerging as an integral part of the project aesthetics. The found objects, integrating in his work, are presented as such or with minor changes, while the wear and tear of materials and objects becomes a springboard of inspiration for the artist.
For example the oxidation of the metal bases turned into inspiration for color likeness. This maturation of the relationship between artist and material or article, is an indication of the evolution of Panikos Tembriotis’ aesthetic. The artist ceases to process and deforms objects, in an effort to refine - beautify but discovers it when beauty hidden within the object, and highlights.
