The Rivals
"The Rivals" by Richard Sheridan. An ACT (Anglo Cypriot Theatre) production.
The Rivals was first performed in 1775 and has since become a classic of English literature, being one of only a few plays from that time period which is still being performed regularly. The Rivals is a comedy of manners, satirising sentimentalism and sophisticated pretensions and the wit still sparkles today. It involves duelling, rapiers at dawn, deceit, double deceit and even double double deceit, all in the name of love, with best friends Captain Jack Absolute, Sir Lucius O’Trigger and Bob Acres all unwittingly falling in love with the same girl, the ravishing and very particular Lydia Languish, whose aunt is the redoubtable Mrs Malaprop, the very embodiment of pretension who delights in using sophisticated sounding words and phrases, most of which are used incorrectly.
