Roaming Images - The persistence of the Image
The ARTos Foundation and the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, invite you to an event featuring Klitsa Antoniou’s installation entitled “The persistence of the Image” and a roundtable discussion, that will take place on Sunday, June 19th 2011 at 20:00 hrs. The event is part of the project “Roaming Images: Crossroads of Greek and Arab culture through the eyes of contemporary artists” organised by the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art (Thessaloniki, Greece) in the framework of the 3rd Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art. The main idea behind the project is the evolving and often contradictory meanings and memories associated with images depending on the ideologies and geo-political contexts in which they are produced and circulate. The project is realized in two phases. The first consists of a series of actions in various cities/areas: United Arab Emirates, Cairo, Alexandria, Tel-Aviv, Damascus, and of course Nicosia. These actions include workshops, exhibitions, talks, discussions etc. The result of these activities and their documentation will be presented in the project’s second phase in Thessaloniki. Iara Boubnova and Sotirios Bahtetzis are the international curators of the project and artistic director is Christos Savvides (Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art).
The event in Nicosia, presents Klitsa Antoniou’s collective project “The persistence of the Image”, curated by Gabriel Koureas. Antoniou, in collaboration with eighty-five artists, architects, designers, sociologists, art historians and art students, who were asked to work on a photograph of Hala Sultan Tekke in Larnaca and their memories associated with it, produced an animation showing the turning pages of a book which will be projected on four books in an asynchronous projection. Her intention is to question the memories and ideas associated with a particular place through the traces of individual memories and interventions, thus questioning the instrumentalisation of history and the perceived dichotomies –geographical, political, religious, ideological– associated with it.
A round table discussion will follow the opening, which will attempt to address some of the issues raised by the event. The panel includes contributions by Iara Boubnova, Christos Savvidis, Gabriel Koureas, Antonis Danos, Achilleas Kentonis, Stefanos Stefanidis, Rebecca Bryant, and Stavros Karayiannis. Both Antoniou’s installation and a documentary of the panel discussion will be later exhibited at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art starting on the 17th of September, as part of the exhibition “Roaming Images”, in the frame of the 3rd Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art.
