Russian Masters
Prokofiev’s “Overture on Hebrew Themes” was initially conceived and written for clarinet, string quartet and piano in 1919, and it wasn’t until 1934 that he was finally persuaded to arrange it for orchestra. Tchaikovsky’s “Variations on a Rococo Theme”, is the closest the composer ever came to writing a concerto for cello and orchestra, with the theme being an original tune written by Tchaikovsky himself in the Rococo style. Similarly, in his Orchestral Suite no. 1, the composer begins and ends the work with a throwback to the Baroque period – a Fugue and a Gavotte respectively – with the four inner movements however tracing their origins to the Classical era.
