Sense and Intellect
The Evagoras and Kathleen Lanitis Foundation is organising and will put on, with the support of the Ministry of Education and Culture, the exhibition “Sense and Intellect. Still Life in the Work of Cypriot Artists”. The exhibition, which will be housed in the Evagoras Lanitis Centre, Lanitis Carob Mill, Limassol, will open on 16th December 2015 at 19:30 and go on till 27th January 2016. The curator of the exhibition is the art historian Dr Eleni S. Nikita.
Still life, which is the name given to the category of subject matter which depicts natural and manufactured objects of daily use, has been a separate genre in art since the end of the 16th century. Traditionally it did not enjoy particular respect, as opposed to historical, religious and mythological themes and even portraits and landscapes. From the beginning of the 20th century, however, the development of this category of subject matter was remarkable. Cezanne, the Cubists, Surrealists, Dadaists and PopArt artists used still life to overturn aesthetic values or to criticise social and economic systems. The occupation of artists with concepts and displays of material culture led to one of the greatest revolutions in art with the gradual abandonment by a number of artists of the illusion of the artistic depiction of objects and its replacement by the object itself. Thus still life is redefined and the work of art meets life itself.
The exhibition has the aim of showing how Cypriot artists have dealt with the subject of still life from the first decades of the 20th century up to today. Because of the close relationship of Cypriot artists with European art, the visitor to the exhibition will be helped at the same time to understand the more general course through time of this category of subject matter.
The exhibition will include works by pioneering artists such as Vassilis Vryonides, by the so-called fathers of Cypriot art (Diamantis, Georgiou, Kanthos) and, proceeding chronologically, the journey will end with the youngest artists, those who express themselves with non-conventional materials and new forms of expression.
Three important paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries will form an introduction to the exhibition, a kind contribution from the Leventeion Art Gallery from its unique collection of works by European artists. One is a painting from the circle of Paul Liégeois, one by the Flemish artist Jocob Xavier Vermoelen and one from the French school.
The exhibition is hosting the following artists:
