Soloists of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra
We invite you to a romantic musical evening with the “Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Soloists (4)” where members of the Orchestra show their talent and virtuosity. This programme features the orchestra’s trumpetists, Gareth Griffiths and Andreas Yiannakouras.
The concerts, under the baton of the Cypriot conductor Yiorgos Kountouris, commence with the Divertimento for chamber orchestra by the gifted Cypriot composer Phanos Dymiotis (1965 – 2007) who prematurely passed away a few years ago; a lively work, which will keep the listener alert with its melodic, rhythmic and structural interest. G. Fr. Handel’s (1685 – 1759) Suite for solo trumpet and orchestra in D major, HWV 341 comes next, in which you will enjoy the trumpet’s bright tone colour, performed by Andreas Yiannakouras. It is Handel’s only opus for solo trumpet and includes three of Baroque’s most popular secular dances: the Gigue, the Minuet and the Bourrée. Trumpetists Gareth Griffiths and Andreas Yiannakouras join their forces in the Concerto for two trumpets in C major, RV 537 by Handel’s senior, Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi (1678 – 1741). This concerto, together with the popular Concerti for violins “The Four Seasons” are but few of the hundreds of concerti for solo string and wind instruments written by Vivaldi. The programme closes with the Symphony in D major by Luigi Cherubini (1760 – 1842), contemporary of Beethoven. The later regarded Cherubini as the greatest composer of his time, a view supported by the fact that Cherubini received many honourary titles in France where he lived. In his Symphony in D major, Cherubini’s mastery in composing expressive, lyrical melodies, as well as outbringing drama and exuberant energy are evident, reminding one of Mozart, at times.
