The recently founded ensemble of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, by continuing to enrich its educational and family concerts, presents its third production under the title “The Sounds of Music”.
This production is organized in collaboration with the Primary Education Department of the Ministry of Education and Culture and with the participation of selected primary schools. Two (2) family concerts will take place on the 6th of April 2013, at Pallas Theatre, Paphos Gate, Nicosia at 16:30 and 18:00. The tickets and the free entry vouchers must be obtained from the box office of Pallas Theatre (tel. 22 410181) from Tuesday the 2nd of April 2013 onwards. The cost of the tickets is €5 for adults and the entrance is free for children and young people under the age of 18.
The children will have the opportunity to enjoy music taken from famous films such as “The sound of Music”, “Harry Potter” and “The Lord of the Rings”, as well as works from the classical repertoire like Vivaldi’s Piccolo Concerto and works by Bach, Paganini and others.
The concert will be conducted by Yiannis Hadjiloizou who will also present the works and soloist will be Diomedes Demetriades (piccolo).
A few words about some of the works:
“Hedwig’s Theme” from the film “Harry Potter” is considered to be the most well-known music theme which can be listened in almost all the movies of Harry Potter. It has also been used in other forms of multimedia putting it in such way on a significant status of the pop culture.
Piccolo Concerto by A. Vivaldi: The first movement of this concerto begins with a lively orchestral introduction through which the soloist enters with a virtuosic passage. The second movement Largo differentiates significantly from the 1st and 3rd movement. This movement allows the piccolo to explore its sound slowly and beautifully. The third and last movement Allegro molto is consisted by a plethora of fast motivos which are even more astounding than those of the first movement.
“My Favorite Things” by K. Rodgers: This song was first presented in Broadway’s original production and was sung by Julie Andrews in the film “The Sound of Music” in 1965. In the musical, the lyrics refer to the things Maria loves and fills up her mind with them when she is going through bad times. The first part of the melody is distinguished by the notes (do, re, sol) and the song is written in the form of AABA.
