Spyros Demetriades: A Town Revisited in Vibrant Nostalgia
An exhibition of the artist’s brand new, fine collection of Giclée prints, as well as his new works in oil.
Lellos Art Point is proud to present the new solo exhibition of the renowned artist Spyros Demetriades: Spyros Demetriades: A Town Revisited in Vibrant Nostalgia, which consists of a diverse selection of works spanning through many years. The exhibition will not only be presenting a number of the artist’s oil paintings, but also his brand new, ‘state of the art’ collection of Giclée prints.
The term Giclée print connotes an elevation in printmaking technology, as images are generated from high resolution digital scans and printed with archival quality inks onto various substrata. The Giclée printing process provides better colour accuracy than any other means of reproduction, and is preferred by museums and art galleries around the world. Through this exhibition, Spyros Demetriades is aiming to introduce this contemporary process of affordable, refined fine art prints (which are signed and numbered by the artist himself) to the Cypriot market.
The artist who commemorates and celebrates locality like only a very few others can, takes us on an energetic, sensory walk around a picturesque Limassol, evoking a number of visions and emotions. He is interpreting the town’s culture in vibrant colours, while his works exude strong feelings of positivity, sensitivity and nostalgia. Nevertheless, Demetriades does not only merely depict distinct landmarks of the city, but he rather subtly comments on political and socio-economical situations of the time by marrying existent and fictional figures in a surreal world where it would be rendered impossible for the one to survive without the other. The artist, manages to capture the essence of the city and the mentality of its people, on every single painting.
Even though Demetriades is constantly evolving, his artistic identity remains intact throughout his whole work; his light, colours and line, his impressionable gaze, the use of his [own] indigenous (or not) cultural archetypes and eminent figures within a familiar context and his emphasising on the ambiguity of time and place, are some of his characteristics. Memory dominates as a centrepiece in Spyros Demetriades’s practice, not as a cling to the past, but as a vehicle for the future.
