Street Art for Peace is a bicommunal project initiated by Petros Heracleous whose aim is to provide Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot youths with an alternative means of expression and to raise public discussions on chronic social and political issues that have not been discussed for many years.
Nicosia – Action I of Street Art for Peace takes place on Saturday 27 October 2012, 12:00 - 18:00, at the Ayios Andreas Park in Nicosia (Ayios Pavlos). Experienced street artists will guide the participants in using graffiti, stencil, yard bombing, wheat pasting to express their views and vision regarding peace in Cyprus.
Street Art for Peace Project Manager, Petros Heracleous states:
“Street Art for Peace is an innovative effort, aiming to bring together as many youths coming from both communities as possible. We consider the direct contact between Greek and Turkish Cypriots to be of great importance since it contributes to the collapse of current negative perceptions about the members of the “other side”. We aim to offer an alternative way of expression to the youth. We believe that through Street Art, young people will express their daily views and concerns in a creative way that speaks to them directly. Through their input, we aim to influence the larger community since the artworks of the participants will be displayed in public spaces, and evidence of our activities will be posted on social media in order to reach as wide a public as possible.”
