Street with a Twist

Cyprus : Street with a Twist

The exhibition ‘Street with a Twist: Capturing Patterns of the [ peculiar] everyday life’ brings six Cyprus-based photographers together for the first time at Lellos Art Point -in Limassol’s Old Town- in an attempt to explore their perception of the streets of cities across Europe and beyond. The photographers allow us to peek into their lenses and take a walk with them in their personally customised narratives of each city. Patterns develop within their frames creating conversations, not only amongst their own photographs, but also with each other’s. By capturing those fleeting moments, the usually unnoticed, the trivial, the mundane, they open small windows of countless stories and possibilities. They are conservators of time and space and stories. Beware; once you visit this show, you may not be able to see the streets in quite the same way again.

When one comes across Adonis Archontides’s work, it is like s/he is looking through his personal photo-album, like peeping in in his very private moments. Intimate and personal, he presents an autobiographical journey through three European cities: Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Rome.

One of Falak Shawwa’s most favourite subjects are reflections, since she is tremendously fascinated by their intricacies. When walking through cities, big or small, little details overlooked by most are what catch her eye; hidden treasures of the everyday, the [extra]ordinary. She always examines the world through a lens, everything is framed and cropped into a photograph.

Ivie Nicolaidou advises us to ‘travel light’, lost within her "Bicycle Diaries". When she discovered the mysterious attraction she felt for this specific vehicle a few years ago, she decided to create a photographic collection, in order to be able to display their journeys. Those journeys, the ones we have not experienced, but that the bicycles let us dream about when looking through their wheels and their spokes.

While her images appear to be anything but staged, when one observes Maria Andronikou’s photographs closely, s/he gets to notice all the fascinating details hidden in the everyday. The scenes depicted in her current photographic work are somehow tributes towards the character of each individual city. She captures all five cities at their finest: stripped off any beautifying effect, disarmingly raw and accurately representational of those urban landscapes.

Tereza Kleovoulou’s distinctive nonchalant, dreamy gaze encapsulates frames that are borderline abstractive. Familiar shapes lose their meaning and become smithereens of a modified actuality. Tereza uses her camera as a microscope, and by zooming in Limassol’s street life, she successfully disorientates us with her surreality and minimalism. She fancies exploring the unknown within the known, re-constructing reality through her own perception.

Unconventional and humorous, Vaggelis Mina’s images are altering reality, creating an ultimately startling impact. Each ‘Little Planet’ is created merely with one photograph; he claims that, to be able to master the effect, one has to visualise the final outcome before even taking the photograph. Vaggelis is inviting us to add a surreal twist to every scene around us - and so we shall!
