The Coatstand
Antidote's new production, 'The Coatstand' premieres on Sunday 6th December at 7.00pm, at Theatre Antidote in Larnaca.
The play invites two young people into an old room belonging to a man called Mr Kostas, in which they discover a book of stories by Anton Chekhov, and a coatstand with unusual items hung on it. As they begin to read the stories, they use the costumes to bring them to life in the way that Mr Kostas once used to do, and in the process, they bring him to life also.
For children, the production offers a significant introduction into the fundamental basics of theatre; dramatic action, characters, use of objects and space, physical theatre, dialogue, the dramatisation of narrative into performance; all of which is achieved through connections with the great Russian writer, Anton Chekhov.
What our creative team has aimed to create is a "bridge" of communication between young viewers and theatre of a higher level, aiming to respect both the great classic writer, and the "code of children's entertainment" (if such a thing still exists in our media-driven society).
The play is currently only available in Greek.
