The Cypriot Fiddler
Documentary screening and open discussion with ethnomusicologist Dr Nicoletta Demetriou.
On Wednesday, 11 May, at 7:30pm Technopolis 20 will screen the documentary The Cypriot Fiddler. The screening will be followed by an open discussion with the documentary’s producer, Dr Nicoletta Demetriou.
In mid-twentieth-century Cyprus, weddings and religious festivals were filled with the sounds of fkiolarides/kemaneciler: the island’s traditional music fiddlers. As the decades progressed and Cyprus’s cultural landscape changed, this class of musicians slowly died out. While much of the fiddlers’ music has been recorded and transcribed, their life stories have not. The Cypriot Fiddler documentary* does precisely that: it traces the lives of traditional music fiddlers from both sides of the Cypriot divide for the very first time.
The Cypriot Fiddler documentary was produced by Dr Nicoletta Demetriou, Research Fellow in Ethnomusicology and Life Writing at Wolfson College, University of Oxford, and was entirely funded through a crowd-sourcing campaign on Kickstarter. In 2015, The Cypriot Fiddler project was chosen as a case study by the British Academy, and was profiled on the British Academy's blog.
* In Cypriot Greek with English subtitles. The documentary was granted to Technopolis 20 free of charge.
