Theatrical Cacoyannis
"Theatrical Cacoyannis" is a part of the artist that is often overshadowed because of his strong association with the world of cinema. In this tribute there will be different sections with discussions, film screenings, recollections of his associates regarding ancient drama, his translations, his work on Shakespeare, his connection with L. Pirandello and his involvement with music performances.
Michael Cacoyannis was a prominent Greek Cypriot filmmaker from Cyprus, best known for his 1964 film Zorba the Greek. He directed the 1983 Broadway revival of the musical based on the film. Much of his work was rooted in classical texts, especially those of the Greek tragedian Euripides. He was nominated for an Academy Award five times, a record for any Greek Cypriot film artist. He received Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film nominations for Zorba the Greek, and two nominations in the Foreign Language Film category for Electra and Iphigenia.
The discussions will take place at the Panos Solomonides Cultural Centre on the 21st and 22nd of October.
The film of Cacoyannis "The Cherry Orchard", based on Anton Chekhov's last play, will be screened at Technohoros of ETHAL on the 24th of October. The film is in Greek with English subtitles. A discussion will follow.
Admission to the events by invitation only. Invitations are available at the offices of ETHAL.
