Thebaid ΧΙΙ: Supplication
The Anerada Theatre Company presents excerpts from Statius’ epic poem Thebaid, adapted for stage. Book 12 of the Roman epic Thebaid begins where Aeschylus’ Seven against Thebes ends, follows the plot of Euripides’ The Suppliants and culminates with the burial of Polynices from Sophocles’ Antigone. Adding details and characters from other versions of the Theban myths and introducing the presence of gods into the plot, Statius creates a compelling tale about the heroism of women. The performance constitutes the world stage premiere of a fascinating dramatic text.
A group of young artists from Cyprus rediscover Thebaid and transform the well-known myth into a rhapsody sung by a “chorus” of five women, a rhapsody inspired by ancient tragedy and the rhapsodist tradition.
