The conclusion of the photography workshop lead by Ismini Chacholiadou at the Centre of Contemporary Art and Design ARTSLab, Nicosia, is marked by a photography exhibition of the eight participants. Through their photographs, they each interpret the theme of “time”.
Photography has made possible the idea of capturing a fleeting moment, more than any other art form. In its snapshot nature, it freezes time and keeps it intact. In this manner it creates memories and simultaneously renders these memories proof of one’s experiences.
Time is an abstract term that we continuously try to determine in an attempt of the observer to perceive and comprehend it. The relationship we have with time is none other than the one we have with clocks: Second-hands, minute-hands, hour-hands…
Hours pass; time ends.
If one takes clocks to be the instruments by which we measure the hours that pass by, one will have to search for proof of “fleeting time” in more transcended meanings. The only thing that is generally agreed upon, is that with the passage of time, the only remnant left behind is a bundle of memories.
It is only with these memories, one could argue, that time can be accounted for as the hours pass and time runs out.
