Ubu Roi - Ludens Ensemble
The European Capital of Culture – Pafos2017 completes its programme of events for this month, at the transformed space of the Old Ice Factory with the comedy “Ubu Roi” by the theatrical group Ludens Ensemble.
In 1897 Alfred Jarry came up with a character that would haunt theatre forever. King Ubu, sublime and ridiculous at once, usurper to the throne of the land of Baloney carries a brush instead of a sceptre, and dreams of his ‘Pâté de dog’ while he liquidates enemies and friends. ‘Ubu Roi’ is a multi media theatre performance, a ludic study on the workings of power where four actors become part of an ensemble that incorporates puppetry, the use of masks and video mapping projections accompanied by live music on stage in order to create the sensation of the carnivalesque.
UBU ROI is a new production by Ludens Ensemble that was premiered at the Hidden Door Festival 2016 in Edinburgh as a work in progress. Ubu Roi will travel to Pafos, Cyprus on the 28th October 2016 as part of the events organised by Pafos, European Capital of Culture 2017. ‘Ubu Roi’ is funded by the European Capital of Culture Pafos 2017 and the Creative Scotland. Moreover we it the In-kind support by the Institut Francais in Edinburgh.
